Sussexes' Exit Damaged Royal Family's Youth Appeal

Catherine Mayer, a royal author, states that the departure of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to the United States has caused "very serious damage" to the monarchy. She believes the institution is losing ground in popularity, particularly among younger audiences, a connection the Sussexes possessed but is now absent.

Mayer noted that while Prince Andrew's controversial past has impacted public perception, the Sussexes had a unique ability to engage younger demographics, a role she feels only Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, might fill, though their approach is more traditional.

Royal broadcaster Ian Pelham Turner suggests that significant cracks persist within the royal family. He believes unresolved divisions, especially between King Charles and Prince William regarding the Sussexes, continue to strain relationships, despite a recent private meeting.

Mayer also touched upon allegations of bullying against Meghan Markle, suggesting their surfacing coincided with Meghan's interviews was politically motivated. She highlighted inherent frictions within the palace system and among family members, noting that the monarchy prioritizes the monarch and heir, often making members nervous if someone appears more glamorous than the institution itself.

Turner compared Meghan's situation to Princess Diana's, suggesting some in "The Firm" perceived Meghan's charm as potentially overshadowing royal family members. Conversely, another commentator, Fordwich, described the Sussexes' strategy as "fundamentally damaging" and "unforgivable," arguing they deliberately undermined the royals. Helena Chard advised that adaptation is crucial for those marrying into the royal family, noting Meghan's failure to "play ball."
