Summary
- Statue of actor and comedian Roy Hudd approved for Theatre Royal.
- Fundraising and wife's idea led to the statue creation.
- Statue installation approved within three years by council.

Plans for a statue celebrating the life of actor and comedian Roy Hudd have received approval to be placed outside the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds. Hudd, a former resident of Suffolk, was celebrated for his 26-year run hosting BBC Radio 2's 'The News Huddlines' and his role in 'Coronation Street' before his passing in 2020.
The statue, crafted by local sculptor Sean Hedges-Quinn, is the result of a fundraising campaign initiated by Hudd's widow, Debbie. Unable to hold a memorial service due to pandemic restrictions, she conceived the idea of a statue at the theatre where Hudd frequently performed and cherished visiting. His performance in 'Goodnight Mister Tom' in 2018 drew a record audience.
West Suffolk Council has granted permission for the statue's installation, providing a three-year window for its completion. The project, costing approximately £100,000, has been financed through contributions from Debbie Hudd and private donors. Mrs. Hudd believes the statue will serve to welcome new patrons to the theatre.
