Director Mariana Rondón is set to release "Looking for Sam," her highly anticipated follow-up to "Bad Hair." This new film is a creative collaboration between Venezuela's Sudaca Films and Mexico's Martfilms.
"Looking for Sam" is described as a docu-fiction hybrid that blurs the lines between memory and identity. It reunites Sam Lange and Samantha Castillo, the lead actors from Rondón's 2013 San Sebastian Golden Shell winner "Bad Hair." Both actors have since left Venezuela, a situation that deeply influences the film's narrative.
The project will be presented at San Sebastian's Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum. Rondón stated the film explores geographical, temporal, bodily, and identity borders, questioning personal transformation.
Sudaca Films, co-founded by Rondón and Marité Ugás, will be participating in a residency at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris from December 2026 to 2027. This residency will facilitate continued screenplay development and time with Lange, who resides in Paris.
Martfilms, known for its commitment to diversity and inclusion, has a history of successful collaborations at San Sebastián, including awards for "Pornomelancholia" and "Daughter of Rage." This partnership with Sudaca Films marks a long-awaited creative experiment for Martfilms' Martha Orozco.
