- He stated the comments were meant to playfully tease fans.
- Kelce and Swift announced their engagement in August 2025.

During the 2023 NFL season, commentator Tony Romo, 45, made two on-air references to Taylor Swift as Travis Kelce's "wife." Romo recently shared in an interview that these comments were intentional, designed to "kind of play with the fans a little bit" and provoke curiosity. He recalled saying, "And there's, I think I said, 'his wife.' I did that on purpose and people [were] like, 'Do you know something...?'"
Romo admitted that calling games while Swift was a frequent attendee was "so difficult" to balance. His first "wife" remark occurred on December 10, 2023, during the Chiefs' game against the Buffalo Bills. A week later, he repeated the slip, calling Swift "Kelce's wife, Taylor Swift," before quickly correcting himself to "Girlfriend!"
Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift officially announced their engagement on August 26, 2025, via Instagram. Swift described Kelce's surprise proposal as something he "really crushed it" with. She later shared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that Kelce is "my favorite person I've ever met," referring to her custom diamond engagement ring as a representation of their future together.
