Romeo & Juliet Ends With Real Weddings Nightly
16 Jun
Summary
- A production of Romeo & Juliet features a real wedding each performance.
- Director reimagined the tragedy with a modern immigration theme.
- Thirty-two ceremonies have rewritten the doomed lovers' fate so far.

The Public Theater's production of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, directed by Saheem Ali, concludes each performance with a real-life wedding ceremony. This innovative staging offers an optimistic spin on the classic tragedy, a concept inspired by Ali's travels to the U.S.-Mexico border and his observations of border marriages. The production uses modern-day immigration and border politics as its thematic core.
Since preview performances commenced on May 22, a total of 32 couples have participated in weddings or vow renewals onstage, thereby rewriting the fate of the star-crossed lovers. The show's official opening on June 11 featured engaged couple Oscar Diaz and Janelly Mendoza, who exchanged vows at the Delacorte Theater. For subsequent performances, couples have been found through word of mouth, with the actors playing Friar Lawrence being ordained to officiate.
The production is scheduled to run through June 28. The unique approach aims to merge romance, art, and life, celebrating commitment and demonstrating how art can unite people and communities.
