Roman Mars Unlocks US Secrets Through Everyday Items

Roman Mars, the acclaimed host of the globally successful podcast 99% Invisible, has partnered with the BBC for a new audio series. Titled 'A History of the United States in 100 Objects,' this project uses everyday items to explore the nation's past, timed for the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence.

Each of the 100 episodes, airing over two years, highlights an object to shed light on broader American narratives. Mars views design as a lens through which to understand the country, noting how even something as simple as a screw thread can reveal much about US imperialism. The series will feature diverse items, including the Bundy Clock, which symbolizes the commodification of labor and time, and a gold coin from the SS Central America, linked to a major financial crisis.

Mars, known for his warm and intimate broadcasting style that makes listeners feel personally addressed, initially pursued a career in biology. His transition to audio storytelling led to the creation of 99% Invisible, a podcast celebrated for making seemingly mundane topics engaging. He believes podcasting's rise was crucial to his career, allowing his unique vocal style to find an audience.

The new series, along with 99% Invisible, remains committed to audio-only production. Mars emphasizes that the power of these documentary shows lies in weaving together different voices and perspectives, rather than relying on visual elements. His approach prioritizes immersive audio storytelling, allowing the listener's imagination to fill the space.
