In December 2025, The Rolling Stones will bring their iconic 1990 concert film Stones at the Max back to IMAX screens across the country. The author, a massive Stones fan, is eagerly anticipating the re-release, as it will be their first opportunity to see the film as it was originally intended.
The author's first-ever concert was a Rolling Stones show during their Steel Wheels Tour in 1989, an experience that sparked a lifelong love of live music. Two years later, the Stones released Stones at the Max, the first-ever concert film shot in the IMAX format. However, the author has never seen the full IMAX version, only clips from the film over the years.
IMAX technology dates back to the 1970s, with the Stones being the first to utilize the format for a concert film. In the early days, IMAX screens were limited to science museums and cultural centers, but the Stones' ambition led them to film performances in London, East Berlin, and Turin, Italy, for the release. While the author's hometown didn't have an IMAX screen at the time, they are now thrilled to finally experience the Stones' larger-than-life performance in the immersive IMAX format in 2025.
