Riteish Deshmukh: Hindi Films Overshadow Marathi Cinema
15 Mar
Summary
- Marathi cinema faces decline due to Hindi film dominance in Maharashtra.
- Ticket prices for low-budget Marathi films mirror those for blockbusters.
- Riteish Deshmukh's production house prioritizes Marathi films.

Actor Riteish Deshmukh has called for significant changes to support Marathi cinema within Maharashtra, expressing concern over its diminishing presence. He stated that the theatrical system in Maharashtra disproportionately favors Hindi cinema, overshadowing local Marathi productions.
Deshmukh pointed out that while the Indian film industry originated in Maharashtra with Dadasaheb Phalke, a Marathi man, the landscape has shifted. He contrasted this with the robust regional industries in states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The actor explained that budget constraints limit Marathi films to INR 3-7 crores, making their ticket prices comparable to INR 100 crore Hindi blockbusters.
This economic disparity, Deshmukh argued, leads audiences to opt for high-budget Hindi films over Marathi ones, contributing to the latter's shrinkage. To counter this, his film company has dedicated the last 10-11 years to producing exclusively Marathi films, aiming to create impactful cinema within the regional budget while striving for larger-than-life experiences.
