Ritabhari Chakraborty Presses Bengal Govt on Harassment

Bengali actor Ritabhari Chakraborty has refiled a petition with the current West Bengal government concerning #MeToo issues, following her previous engagement with the administration in 2024. Chakraborty, who had then urged women in the Bengali film industry to speak out against sexual harassment, met with the former Chief Minister to submit a petition for an investigative committee.

She recounted that in her initial years in the industry, fear of repercussions and professional repercussions prevented her from speaking out. Chakraborty mentioned preserving evidence and preferring a structured legal process over social media trials. She is awaiting a formal meeting with the current government to discuss the petition's progression.

The actor's initiative aligns with broader #MeToo movements and drew inspiration from Kerala's Hema Committee. She had previously accused two influential producers of sexual harassment during her meeting with the former Chief Minister, who had agreed to form a committee of ministers to review the Hema Committee report and establish guidelines.

Chakraborty had specifically requested that no film industry members be included in the committee, a request reportedly honored by the then-Chief Minister. Her advocacy stems from her personal experiences and a desire to create a safer environment within the industry. Chakraborty gained prominence through the TV show 'Ogo Bodhu Sundori' and has since starred in several successful films.
