Hiccup Meets The Grabber: Actor's Hilarious On-Set Mix-Up

As of October 18th, 2025, 18-year-old actor Mason Thames is gearing up for the release of two highly anticipated movies - The Black Phone 2 and Regretting You. This comes just a few months after he made his debut as the live-action Hiccup in the How To Train Your Dragon franchise over the summer.

Filming the two new projects back-to-back seems to have taken a toll on Thames, who revealed a hilarious on-set mix-up while working on The Black Phone 2. The actor, who played the lead role of Finney in the first Black Phone movie, admitted to getting his characters confused at times, accidentally slipping into his Hiccup persona on set.

This is understandable, given the vastly different tones and acting styles required for the fantasy world of How To Train Your Dragon versus the dark, horror-tinged universe of The Black Phone. While Hiccup is a heroic, dragon-riding protagonist, Finney is a teenager haunted by the villainous Grabber, played by Ethan Hawke.

Despite the challenges, Thames seems to have navigated the transition between these two high-profile roles with aplomb. Fans can look forward to seeing the young actor showcase his versatility in these contrasting projects, which are both set to hit theaters later this month.
