This year's festival saw an estimated 65 million attendees, a substantial 22% increase compared to last year, with many travelling internationally.
Originally a pre-Lent observance dating back to 1723, the carnival is now world-renowned for its energetic street parties and colourful displays. The highlight for many includes elaborate dance parades featuring samba schools on enormous floats adorned in spectacular costumes, illuminating the South American sun.
Notable attendees this year included football legend Ronaldo and former Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti, who were seen enjoying the festivities. The event continued with numerous performances at the Sambadrome, showcasing samba schools like Grande Rio, Unidos de Vila Isabel, and Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel through February 16-18, 2026.
