Ricky Gervais' Luxury Home Plans Derailed by Ecology Demands

As of October 20th, 2025, renowned British comedian Ricky Gervais' plans to construct a luxurious new home on the banks of the River Thames have hit a major roadblock. Ecology experts from Gervais' local council are now demanding that the 64-year-old comedian incorporate several wildlife-friendly features into his home renovation designs.

The council's ecology team has stated that Gervais' current plans do not meet the required biodiversity net gain of at least 10%. This means the new development must leave the natural habitat in a better state than it is currently. To achieve this, the council is insisting that Gervais include two bee bricks, one hedgehog house, and an integral bird box in his plans. Additionally, the council has banned Gervais from having a pond as part of the biodiversity net gain.

Furthermore, Gervais will be required to obtain a bat license from Natural England, as 333 soprano pipistrelle bats were recorded emerging from his current dwelling in 2023, with a peak of 276 bats seen in 2025. The council is also likely to demand that Gervais build a new bat loft in his garage, as well as erect two bat boxes in nearby trees.

The Environment Agency has also objected to Gervais' plans, stating that the proposed measures to mitigate the impact on the nearby River Thames are not satisfactory. The agency has requested more detailed information, such as plans, cross-sections, and a long-term management scheme, to ensure the protection and enhancement of the river's habitat.

Despite these setbacks, Gervais remains determined to proceed with his ambitious home renovation project, which was inspired by the popular TV show "Grand Designs." However, he must now navigate the complex web of ecological requirements and regulatory hurdles before he can bring his vision to life.
