Richard Curtis, renowned for his work on "The Vicar of Dibley" and "Four Weddings and a Funeral," is returning to the sitcom genre with an audio series for BBC Radio 4. Titled "Greatest Living Writer," this marks his first sitcom in almost two decades and his debut for audio. The series is slated to launch on Boxing Day.
Starring Bill Nighy as the titular literary giant John Westlake, the show explores themes of genius, legacy, and the challenges of social interaction. Nighy's character is described as a celebrated author whose brilliance is matched only by his lack of social skills.
The production, from Goldhawk Productions, boasts a star-studded cast including Nicola Walker, Nick Mohammed, Jim Broadbent, Meera Syal, and Madelyn Smedley. Emma Freud serves as script editor, noting that this work is closer to Curtis's personal life than any previous project.
"Greatest Living Writer" will be available as a BBC Sounds box-set two weeks prior to its Radio 4 premiere. Curtis expressed his enjoyment of the concise 15-minute format and writing for performers he admires, focusing on the creative world he knows well.
