Richa Chadha's Mumbai: Unveiling Hidden Histories

Actor-producer Richa Chadha's new non-fiction series, Musafiri, offers an in-depth exploration of Mumbai, venturing beyond typical tourist narratives. The eight-episode series, conceived as "edutainment," uncovers the city's layered past, diverse communities, and the individuals dedicated to preserving its untold stories.

Chadha, a history graduate, was inspired to create the series after discovering a forgotten lighthouse on a Koli friend's fishing trip, realizing how little she knew about her adopted city. This personal revelation fueled her desire to connect with local histories and people.

The series highlights stories of "people, places, and pyaar," featuring individuals like environmentalists working with indigenous species and academics leading history walks. These walks reveal Mumbai's complex past, including former synagogues, historical Chinese communities, and ancient port sites, showcasing the extraordinary histories often overlooked.

Chadha encourages a shift in travel perspectives, urging Indian travelers to approach destinations with the same curiosity typically reserved for international travel. She advocates for slowing down, engaging with local cultures, and appreciating places beyond performative tourism.

Addressing concerns about over-tourism, Chadha notes that some hidden gems are best kept that way. However, she believes that a deeper understanding of history and heritage can foster a stronger sense of self and encourage preservation efforts. She is particularly drawn to uncovering historical connections, such as Bombay's rise as a port influenced by global events like the Suez Canal opening and the American Civil War.
