RGV: Tollywood Flops Fuel Industry, Not Hits!

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has asserted that Telugu cinema's persistent financial troubles are rooted in a systemic lack of accountability from directors and inadequate cost management by producers. Varma argues that the core problem isn't the quality of films but rather mismanagement during production.

He elaborated that many financiers in Tollywood act merely as investors rather than actively involved producers. This leads to uncontrolled budget overruns when initial production schedules falter, trapping producers in a cycle of escalating expenses.

Varma controversially suggested that the industry is sustained by its failures, not its successes. He contrasted Tollywood's model with Bollywood's post-pandemic adoption of corporate discipline and fixed budgets.

The director stressed that true producers must be deeply involved in filmmaking, not just funding. He concluded that improved financial discipline and director accountability are essential for averting recurring budget issues.
