Two-time Oscar nominee Joshua Oppenheimer's new short film, 'The Revolution Against Death,' is set for a global release in early December. The film offers a visceral portrait of aging, death, and the quest for immortality. It was filmed at the annual Revolution Against Aging and Death Festival, where a sense of fear regarding illness and dying pervades the sessions.
Oppenheimer, who has grappled with a childhood fear of death, recognized his own anxieties in the attendees' pursuit of defeating mortality. This personal journey led him to the realization that "because nothing lasts, everything matters -- and eternity lies in change itself." The film is described as his poetic exploration of this profound understanding.
The short film will be co-released by New York Op-Docs and MUBI, having previously premiered at the Tampere Film Festival and screened at the Telluride Film Festival. It is now part of Op-Docs's 2026 slate of awards contenders. The film is also scheduled to screen at the Chicago International Film Festival and IDFA in Amsterdam.
