The Broadway revival of David Auburn's Tony Award-winning play, "Proof," delves into the complex human experience of grief and mental instability. Set in Chicago in the 1990s, the narrative centers on Catherine, portrayed by Ayo Edebiri in her Broadway debut, who struggles with her father Robert's (Don Cheadle) death and her own worsening mental health. Catherine, a brilliant mathematician like her father, grapples with the hereditary nature of his schizophrenia and the sacrifices she's made in her life.
As the story unfolds through flashbacks, the audience witnesses the deep father-daughter bond and Robert's descent into madness. The arrival of Hal (Jin Ha), one of Robert's students, and Catherine's sister Claire (Kara Young) from New York, brings Catherine's buried emotions and mathematical talents to the surface. The play skillfully examines the immense sacrifices often made by caregivers, the pervasive sexism in academia, and the profound impact of familial legacy on self-perception.
Directed by Thomas Kail, the production benefits from Teresa L. Williams's scenic design and Amada Zieve's lighting, which effectively shift the mood and setting. Kris Bowers's original music further enhances the atmosphere. While Don Cheadle, Kara Young, and Jin Ha deliver powerful performances, Edebiri's portrayal of Catherine is criticized for lacking authentic emotional depth, particularly in dramatic moments, which ultimately affects the play's overall impact.
