Pune Lab Restores Legendary Filmmaker's Works

Six seminal films from the legendary Indian filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak have undergone significant restoration and are currently being featured at the Il Cinema Ritrovato film festival. This celebrated event, marking its 40th anniversary, is screening the restored works across 13 slots over nine days in Bologna, Italy. These screenings coincide with the birth centenary celebrations of Ghatak, whose films like 'Meghe Dhaka Tara' and 'Subarnarekha' continue to influence global cinema. Cameo Media Labs, a Pune-based company, led the audio restoration efforts. This crucial work was part of the National Film Heritage Mission (NFHM), a key initiative dedicated to preserving India's rich film legacy. The mission ensures these cinematic masterpieces are accessible for academic research and cultural appreciation, meeting high international exhibition standards. The restoration project is a collaborative effort involving the National Film Development Corporation and the National Film Archive of India (NFDC-NFAI), operating under the Union ministry of information and broadcasting. Purab Gujar, co-founder of Cameo Media Labs, expressed that seeing these restored classics on international platforms is highly rewarding. He emphasized the vital role of audio restoration in maintaining a film's artistic integrity and the filmmaker's original vision, underscoring India's growing capacity for world-class film preservation.
