Resident Evil Dominates Global Box Office
7 Oct
Summary
- Resident Evil is set to become Zach Cregger's highest-grossing film.
- China's release contributed significantly to its global box office success.
- The film surpassed $280 million worldwide, easily topping previous franchise highs.

As of this week, Zach Cregger's directorial take on Resident Evil is on track to become his highest-grossing film globally, exceeding the $270M achieved by his previous project, Weapons. This achievement is largely due to the film's recent theatrical release in China.
During its first two days in China, Resident Evil garnered $20M, projecting a strong first-week total of approximately $35M. Combined with its existing global gross of $245.4M prior to the China release, the film is expected to surpass $280M worldwide.
The success in China is noteworthy, as the Resident Evil franchise has a significant cultural presence there. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, released in 2017, was a massive hit in the region, contributing substantially to its global earnings and remaining the franchise's highest-grossing film.
Cregger's Resident Evil has also outperformed other horror releases in China this year. Looking ahead, Cregger's next project, the sci-fi film Flood starring Jennifer Lawrence, is slated for release on August 11, 2028. Additionally, a prequel to Weapons, titled Gladys, is currently undergoing rewrites and is scheduled for release on September 8, 2028.
