Last week, the Yakshagana community mourned the loss of a legendary performer, Sujana Sullia, who passed away at the age of 89 due to age-related health issues. Sujana was a renowned Yakshagana artiste of the Thenku Thittu style and the head of 'Rangamane' in Sullia.
Born into the famous Navoor family of Sullia, Sujana began his career as a theatre actor before becoming a Yakshagana artiste. He served in various troupes for over 30 years and was known for his exceptional talent in comic roles, effectively portraying a variety of male and female characters. Sujana was also proficient in all aspects of the backstage, including Talamaddale, makeup, and was a well-versed Yakshagana artiste.
As a Yakshagana guru, Sujana established the 'Videyadevi Natya Kala Sangha' in Sullia and inspired many through the 'Sujana Yakshagana Study Centre' at his Rangamane. Rightfully honored with several awards, he received the prestigious 'Yakshagana Kalaranga Award' in 2008. Sujana's passing has left a void in the Yakshagana community, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of performers.
