In November 2022, the South African culinary world was shaken by the tragic loss of Mynie Steffens, a beloved chef, TV host, and helicopter pilot. Steffens, who was just 43 years old, died in a helicopter accident on a citrus farm in the Eastern Cape region of the country.
Steffens was well-known for her lifestyle cooking show "Speel met Vuur," which she co-hosted with her friend from high school, Aldi van der Walt. She had also recently published a cookbook of the same name in 2021. Steffens was described by her co-host as someone who "lived life to the full," always brimming with ideas that she turned into successful endeavors.
A memorial service was held for Steffens on November 14, 2022, where her family members asked attendees to "come as you are" and celebrate the "legend that she was." In lieu of flowers, the family requested that donations be made to Boston Terrier Rescue, a cause close to Steffens' heart.
The memorial was marked by a touching tribute, with Heli Pilot, the helicopter pilot training center Steffens was associated with, sharing a video on Instagram that showed three helicopters flying overhead and dropping pink powder in the sky as a farewell to the beloved pilot and chef.
