Acclaimed Shakespearean Performer John Woodvine Dies After Illustrious Career

On October 7th, 2025, the British theater and television industry mourned the loss of acclaimed actor John Woodvine, who passed away earlier that morning at his home. He was 96 years old.

Woodvine, a veteran of the stage, was renowned for his Shakespearean performances. In 1976, he starred opposite renowned actors Ian McKellen and Judi Dench in a production of "Macbeth" for the Royal Shakespeare Company, which was later filmed for television. Eleven years later, in 1987, Woodvine won an Olivier Award for Best Comedy Performance for his portrayal of Sir John Falstaff in the Old Vic's production of "The Henrys."

Over the course of his illustrious career, Woodvine appeared in more than 70 productions for the Old Vic, the National Theatre, and the Royal Shakespeare Company. His theater credits included classics such as "The Taming of the Shrew," "As You Like It," "Henry IV," and "Romeo and Juliet." He also had several Broadway appearances, including in "King Richard II" and "Troilus and Cressida."

In addition to his acclaimed stage work, Woodvine had a number of television roles, including playing Dr. Hirsch in the 1981 supernatural comedy film "An American Werewolf in London" and the Archbishop of York in four episodes of Netflix's "The Crown." His other TV credits included "Z Cars," "New Scotland Yard," and "Doctor Who."

Woodvine is survived by his wife, actress Lynn Farleigh, and their two children, Mary and Emma.
