On September 28, 2025, the world remembered Lata Mangeshkar, the legendary Indian singer affectionately known as the Nightingale of India, on what would have been her 96th birthday. Mangeshkar, who passed away in February 2022 at the age of 92, left an indelible mark on the music industry, recording nearly 50,000 songs in 14 different languages over the course of her extraordinary career.
Mangeshkar's contributions to music were widely recognized, with the singer receiving the nation's highest honors, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989 and the Bharat Ratna in 2001. In 2009, she was also conferred France's prestigious National Order of the Legion of Honour. Despite her immense fame and success, Mangeshkar chose to keep her personal life deeply private, never marrying and instead dedicating herself to her music and the responsibilities that came with it.
Reflecting on her decision to remain unmarried, Mangeshkar once shared, "People ask why I never married. To that I say that God gave me a job to do and I'm very satisfied with my work. Yes, like everyone else, I do have my moments of sorrow. But my sorrow is very temporary. What I cannot bear is to see other people suffering. I feel a sense of joy by helping such people." Mangeshkar's outlook was rooted in her strong faith and belief in destiny, as she often expressed the idea that good thoughts and deeds could help soften the impact of one's fate.
While Mangeshkar never publicly spoke about it, it is known that she did find love once in her life. In the 1960s, she shared a close bond with Raj Singh Dungarpur, the youngest son of the ruler of the princely state of Dungarpur in Rajasthan. Dungarpur, a passionate cricketer, became friends with Mangeshkar's brother, Hridaynath, and the two often played cricket together. However, when Dungarpur's father learned of their relationship, he strongly opposed it, citing Mangeshkar's different social background and the age gap between the two. Ultimately, the families' objections prevented the two from ever marrying.
