- The motel opened in 1969 and was a cultural icon for residents.

The Redbeck Motel, a landmark establishment that once welcomed stars such as Sir Tom Jones and Diana Ross, is scheduled to cease operations. Its final day of business will be Sunday, February 22. The motel, which first opened its doors in 1969, had become a significant cultural icon in Wakefield.
Plans were approved at the end of last year to demolish the beloved venue. In its place, developers Yorkshire Choice Homes intend to construct 90 new residential homes. This decision was met with objections from local residents who petitioned against the demolition.
Managing director Peter Worth JP expressed pride in the motel's unique service, noting its consistent availability day and night for the people of Wakefield. He acknowledged that while the time has come to move on, the establishment and its customers will not be forgotten. Developers have pledged to create a social history of the motel.
