Record Film Submissions for Major Award
19 Oct
Summary
- 105 films are eligible, a record number for the prestigious award category.
- New rules allowed countries like Cyprus, El Salvador, and Rwanda to submit films.
- Films qualified through top festival wins, expanding international representation.

This year's prestigious international film award has seen a record 105 films declared eligible, a significant increase from previous years. The expansion is attributed to new Academy rules and submissions from first-time participating countries such as Cyprus, El Salvador, and Rwanda. Notably, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sri Lanka have also submitted films for the first time in decades.
Additional films qualified by winning top prizes at six major film festivals, including Sundance, Cannes, and Venice. This change broadens the scope beyond traditional country submissions. Voters are assigned to one of nine groups, each with a curated list of 11 or 12 films to view before the shortlist voting period from December 7 to December 11.
The official shortlist, featuring the top 15 vote-getters, will be announced on December 15. For the first time, the films are listed alphabetically by title, reflecting the award's shift to recognizing the film itself rather than solely the country of origin.
