Rebecca Gayheart is embarking on her musical theater debut in "Jawbreaker The Musical," currently showing at the Hudson Backstage Theatre. She is set to play Principal Sherwood, a role that merges characters from the original 1999 film.
Gayheart admitted to feeling "scared shitless" about her musical performance, particularly her solo. Despite her nervousness about singing, she aims to deliver an entertaining and fun experience for the audience.
Writer and director Darren Stein, who also penned the musical's book, expressed his excitement about reuniting with Gayheart. He noted that her character in the musical is an amalgamation of Ms. Sherwood and Detective Vera Cruz, offering a more complex arc than in the movie.
While Gayheart previously starred in "Jawbreaker" as Julie Freeman, her current role as Principal Sherwood involves a transformation, blending the traits of the mild-mannered administrator and the assertive detective. She hopes her former co-stars might take over the role in a potential West End run.
The musical is scheduled to run through September 20. Separately, Gayheart also expressed openness to reprising her role in a potential "Urban Legend" reboot, provided it maintains the original film's tone.
