Sony Pictures Television has ordered 24 new episodes of the beloved educational children's series "Reading Rainbow." Mychal Threets, who hosted the initial revival episodes in 2025, is set to return as host for the new installments. These episodes will feature new celebrity guests and books, to be announced at a later date. The series is produced and distributed by SPT, with additional shortened episodes planned for release on their YouTube channel, Kidzuko.
The original "Reading Rainbow" first premiered in 1983 and ran until 2006, with the aim of fostering a love for reading and creating connections between children and books. The revival, which began in 2025 on Kidzuko, has already seen significant success, with four episodes garnering over 4.79 million views. The new episodes will continue this mission, featuring new content designed to encourage avid reading.
Kristen McGregor will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Michael Davies, an executive producer, highlighted the passionate audience and the critical importance of educational programming, especially given current literacy rate declines. He expressed excitement for the show's evolution and the magic it can bring. Tom Calderone also noted the successful partnership and the meaningfulness of evolving the series for today's audiences.
