Nintendo is enhancing its Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack offering with two N64-era classics this December. On December 17, subscribers will gain access to Rayman 2: The Great Escape and Ubisoft's early 3D platformer, Tonic Trouble. These games join an exclusive library that already includes titles from Game Boy Advance, Sega Genesis, and GameCube.
Tonic Trouble, though less known, holds historical significance as Ubisoft's inaugural 3D platformer, co-conceived by Rayman creator Michel Ancel. Its release in 1999, the same year as Rayman 2, saw it overshadowed. Rayman 2, meanwhile, is celebrated as the series' pivotal leap into 3D, earning critical acclaim and solidifying its place in gaming history.
The addition of Rayman 2 precedes the long-requested Donkey Kong 64, a puzzling delay given the character's recent 3D platformer resurgence. This move aligns with the 30th anniversary celebrations for the Rayman franchise, offering fans a nostalgic journey. The N64 emulator on Switch also features enhancements like a rewind function and a CRT filter for an authentic retro experience.
