Rachael Gunn, also known as Raygun, a breakdancer from Australia, experienced intense scrutiny after her performance at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Her three rounds of competition on August 9, 2024, at Place de la Concorde resulted in no points earned, drawing significant criticism.

Moments before competing, Gunn sought therapy, admitting her fear of global ridicule. Her dance routine, which featured elements referencing her home country, unexpectedly went viral. This unexpected fame even drew a positive comment from singer Adele, who called it "the best thing that's happened in the Olympics the entire time."

Gunn, who holds a Ph.D. and previously worked as a lecturer at Macquarie University, acknowledged the humor in some memes but noted a shift in public sentiment, describing it as a "growing monster."

Her family expressed surprise at her Olympic aspirations, with her father laughing when asked if he ever associated "Olympian" with her name. Concerns were also raised about her selection, with a Change.org petition circulating to "hold Raygun accountable," garnering over 55,000 signatures before its removal.

The Australian Olympic Committee clarified that Gunn's selection followed a "transparent and independent qualification event and nomination process." Gunn herself addressed the backlash on Instagram, expressing that while she appreciated the positivity and joy she brought, the immense hate was "devastating."
