According to a recent interview, actor Ray Winstone's "Star Wars" audition did not go as planned. Winstone, known for his roles in films like "Black Widow," admitted that he was "out all night" the evening before his audition for the part of Padmé Amidala's father. As a result, he arrived at the casting call "pissed," or intoxicated.
Winstone recalled that as soon as he walked into the audition, he knew he was "wrong for the part." Instead of directly telling him, "Star Wars" creator George Lucas "relayed the message" through someone else, which Winstone said he "took umbrage" at. Winstone also noted that Lucas appeared to be "yawning" throughout the entire casting, likely due to "jet lag."
Despite the disastrous audition, Winstone and Lucas later worked together on the 2008 film "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," where Winstone played the antagonist. Winstone has no regrets about missing out on the "Star Wars" role, stating that the franchise's "bluescreen work" would have "bored the arse off" him.
The role of Padmé's father ultimately went to actor Graeme Blundell, who appeared in "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith." Winstone's more recent credits include "Damsel," "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish," and the "The Gentlemen" TV series.
