A UK collector recently discovered a remarkable treasure in his loft: 47 rare copies of the 1988 comic 'This Island Bradman.' Purchased for a mere £20 at a car boot sale years ago, these comics eventually sold for £63,440 at auction in Surrey on November 4, 2025. This sale significantly surpassed the £35,000 pre-sale estimate.
The collector, an ephemera enthusiast rather than a dedicated comic collector, stored the box away for about a decade. It wasn't until the Covid-19 pandemic that he explored its contents, leading him to research and uncover the comic's unique history. The 'This Island Bradman' comic was a bespoke commission for businessman Godfrey Bradman's son Daniel's bar mitzvah in 1988.
Created as a replacement for a damaged collection, the comic featured Daniel Bradman and his friend. Written by David Levin with art by Curt Swan and Angelo Torres, it holds significant appeal due to its private origins and the involvement of established artists. While an estimated 200 copies were produced, many were distributed or lost.
After realizing their value, the collector sold one copy online for £750. The remaining 47 copies were then auctioned individually, with some fetching up to £2,600 each, contributing to the final impressive total. This discovery underscores the potential value hidden in overlooked collections.
