Excavators in Aspendos, Turkey, recently uncovered an ornate Roman mosaic near the ancient city's theater. This significant find dates to the early 3rd century A.D. and depicts the youthful river god Eurymedon, a rare subject in mosaic art.
The mosaic floor, spanning approximately 20 by 25 feet, was found on Theater Street, a pathway connecting the acropolis and the theater. Officials noted that depictions of river gods are exceptionally rare, making this discovery of great scientific and artistic importance for understanding Roman-period Anatolian mosaic art.
Archaeologists believe the mosaic once served as the floor of a pool. Evidence suggests the structure may have been subdivided into separate rooms following an earthquake in 262 A.D. The discovery adds to Turkey's reputation as a hub for significant archaeological finds from the ancient Roman and early Christian eras.
