St Dubrucius Church in Porlock, Somerset, has secured £1.4 million in lottery funding to undertake critical repairs on its exceptionally rare oak-shingled spire. This distinctive feature, last replaced in 1933, endangers the underlying 13th-century timbers due to potential water damage.
The awarded funds will facilitate comprehensive restoration, including repairing the spire's internal timber structure and applying new oak shingles to its entire exterior. The project also encompasses broader works across other parts of the historic church.
Beyond the preservation of its unique architectural heritage, the initiative includes installing solar panels and a new heating system. Furthermore, a three-year programme of community workshops and efforts to combat isolation among older residents are planned.
This funding is anticipated to ensure the spire's survival for future generations, while also fostering community engagement through local history exploration and skill-sharing, strengthening Porlock's identity and pride.
