An ancient Crusader sword, dating back to the 12th century, has been discovered off the coast of Dor, an ancient port in northern Israel. The artifact, measuring over three feet long, was found by a University of Haifa student, Shlomi Katzin, who alerted maritime authorities.
Professor Debbie Cvikel of the University of Haifa described the discovery as an "extremely rare find that sheds light on the Crusader presence along the country's coastline." Swords from this period are exceptionally rare in the region, contributing significantly to the understanding of maritime activities and warrior life during the Crusades.
Following its discovery, the sword was sent for a CT scan, allowing researchers to examine its internal structure without invasive procedures. The sword, now encrusted with shells, still retains its distinct shape. Researchers noted the symbolic importance of swords to knights, representing chivalry, the Christian faith, and their essential weaponry.
