Summary
- A rare first edition of 'Casino Royale' was bought for £1.
- The valuable book was discovered over 10 years after purchase.
- The rare novel sold at auction for £10,000.
A remarkable find surfaced from a UK car boot sale, where a £1 purchase of Ian Fleming's 1953 novel 'Casino Royale' was recently auctioned for £10,000. The book, which introduced the iconic James Bond, remained with its owner for over a decade before its value was realized.
Initially bought for its distinctive cover, the book was forgotten in a box. Upon clearing belongings, the owner searched the title online and contacted auctioneers. Adam Partridge identified it as a clean first edition, complete with its original dust jacket, a crucial element for collectors.
The original dust jacket, featuring the initial price of 10 shillings and sixpence and lacking a Times review on its front flap, confirmed its first-state status. Auctioneers noted that although the jacket had minor tears, its survival significantly contributed to the book's high value among the 4,750 copies originally printed.
The 'Casino Royale' first edition went under the hammer on June 24, 2024, at Adam Partridge's Devon saleroom. It achieved a hammer price of £10,000, with a telephone bidder specializing in rare Ian Fleming editions making the winning bid.
