Raphael: Rediscovering a Renaissance Master
21 Mar
Summary
- Raphael, once a peer of Leonardo and Michelangelo, has seen his fame wane.
- A new exhibition aims to reintroduce Raphael as an artist for today.
- The show highlights Raphael's idealism, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit.

For centuries, Raphael was lauded as a genius alongside Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, celebrated for his compositions' lifelike grace. However, his star has diminished over the past 150 years, with his serene Madonnas now perceived by some as excessively pious.
Carmen Bambach, a senior curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, believes this perception has damaged Raphael's legacy. To counter this, she has organized "Raphael: Sublime Poetry," an exhibition opening March 29, featuring 237 works.
This extensive survey includes paintings, drawings, prints, and tapestries. The exhibition aims to present Raphael as an artist relevant to our time, highlighting his idealism, innovative spirit, and early use of technologies to promote his art.
