Ranbir Kapoor's casting as Lord Rama in Nitesh Tiwari's upcoming "Ramayana" has ignited a considerable debate. Questions linger about whether the actor, known for diverse roles including the aggressive character in "Animal," can convincingly embody one of Hinduism's most revered deities. This casting choice has drawn criticism from various quarters, including actors who previously starred in television adaptations of the epic.
Shiv Sagar, grandson of Ramanand Sagar, creator of the 1987 "Ramayan," expressed personal difficulty in picturing Ranbir as Lord Rama post-"Animal," advocating for a fresh face. He, however, praised the casting of Yash as Raavan and Sai Pallavi as Sita, noting their lack of prior character baggage. Veteran actor Mukesh Khanna also questioned the portrayal of Lord Rama as an action hero, emphasizing the deity's traditional depiction of restraint and dignity.
Gajendra Chauhan, who played Yudhishthir, echoed concerns about established stars carrying an image that might hinder audience acceptance in mythological roles. Nikita Rawal criticized Ranbir's past public statement about eating beef, deeming him unsuitable for the divine role and calling for a public apology. Sunil Lahri, who played Lakshman, noted a perceived lack of innocence and calmness in Kapoor's depiction compared to Arun Govil's iconic portrayal.
Conversely, Dipika Chikhlia, who played Sita in the original series, defended Ranbir's casting. She highlighted that actors portray varied characters and that Kapoor's ability to transition from "Barfi" to "Animal" demonstrates his versatility. Ranbir Kapoor himself acknowledged that not everyone may find him the right fit, stating that the ideal casting involves an actor with the right intentions and faith. He also shared that the role brought him immense responsibility and an opportunity for personal growth.
