In Prayagraj, the 12-day grand Ramlila by the Shri Katra Ramlila Committee is set to offer a unique experience by weaving live folk and martial arts into its storytelling. These art forms are no longer separate acts but are integral to scenes depicting armies, celebrations, and gatherings, aiming to make the narrative more lively and authentic.
An Akhada group from Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, renowned for martial arts legacy, will realistically portray the armies of Ram and Ravan. This group, led by Rajkumar Raikwar, carries forward the tradition of late Padma Shri awardee Bhagwan Das Raikwar. Their participation is sponsored by the North Central Zone Cultural Centre (NCZCC).
Furthermore, Chhau, a traditional dance form from Ranchi, Jharkhand, known for its blend of theatre, dance, and martial movements, will add visual spectacle. Sponsored by the Department of Culture, this group's performance is expected shortly.
In addition to martial traditions, the vibrant folk tradition of Badhai from Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, will be featured during celebratory moments. Unlike the martial performances, Badhai will infuse scenes of joy and community participation. This group is also sponsored by NCZCC.
Director Atul Yadvanshi stated that all art forms are utilized according to the dramatic needs of the Ramkatha. The combination of martial discipline, stylized movements, and celebratory folk traditions, alongside storytelling, acting, costumes, and multimedia, promises an immersive theatrical environment.
