Ankhen: The Blockbuster Spy Film You Forgot

Ramanand Sagar, now revered for the 1980s television phenomenon Ramayan, first established his filmmaking prowess with Bollywood's initial major spy thriller, Ankhen. Released in 1968, the same year India's external intelligence agency RAW was formed, the film starring Dharmendra and Mala Sinha became the year's biggest blockbuster. Its ambitious scale, featuring international locations and a patriotic narrative, set a new standard for Indian cinema. Ankhen's success was immense, achieving a diamond jubilee by running for over 75 weeks. This film, though rarely discussed today, provided the foundational blueprint for modern Hindi spy thrillers. It showcased globetrotting adventure, sophisticated espionage, and a distinct Indian flavour, proving Sagar's versatility. While Sagar later redefined mythological storytelling on television, his contribution to the spy genre through Ankhen remains a significant, albeit overlooked, chapter in Bollywood history.
