Telugu Cinema's Money Maze: Varma Blasts Director-Led Overspending

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has pinpointed a critical issue plaguing the Telugu film industry: a severe lack of accountability among directors, coupled with producers who possess insufficient financial acumen. Varma asserts that budgets frequently spiral out of control because producers often fail to grasp the intricate details of a director's vision and planning, such as shot requirements and preparation time.

Varma emphasizes that directors should bear the primary responsibility for cost overruns, as they dictate creative decisions and expenditures. He argues that without holding directors accountable, the industry's business model is fundamentally flawed. The filmmaker also noted that even successful films may not yield substantial profits for producers due to these inflated budgets.

The industry's casual approach to expenditure is exemplified by an anecdote where a senior actress was paid a full crore for ten days, despite only being called for a few of those days. Varma pointed out that such individual costs, while seemingly small, contribute to the larger problem of budgets ballooning from 100 crores to 200 crores.

Varma further suggested that this phenomenon is fueled by a competitive spirit where filmmakers aim to surpass the scale and grandeur of previous blockbusters, leading to incremental cost increases. Despite his critiques of the financial aspects, Varma acknowledged the creative prowess of South Indian cinema nationally, noting its dominance in India's highest-grossing films. He also posited that flop films, contrary to popular belief, play a crucial role in circulating money within the industry's ecosystem by distributing funds among technicians and workers.
