Actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered at Tihar Jail on February 5, 2026, to serve a six-month sentence in a cheque bounce and loan default case. This followed the Delhi High Court's rejection of his final plea for an extension.
The legal issues originated in 2010 when Yadav borrowed approximately Rs 5 crore for his production, 'Ata Pata Laapata'. The film's failure led to financial difficulties, causing the dues, with interest and penalties, to surge to nearly Rs 9 crore.
Despite issuing dishonoured cheques and facing convictions upheld by lower courts in 2018 and 2019, Yadav was granted numerous extensions by the High Court. However, his repeated failure to adhere to payment schedules and court undertakings led to the final surrender order.
The court emphasized that leniency could not be extended indefinitely and that individuals from any industry cannot expect special circumstances. Yadav had previously expressed helplessness regarding repayment, noting a lack of significant support from industry colleagues.
Following his surrender, actors Sonu Sood and Anees Bazmee, among others, offered support and roles, highlighting the industry's need to stand together during difficult times.
