Rajini: Why Baasha 2, Petta 2 Were Rejected
10 Oct
Summary
- Rajinikanth rejected sequels for Baasha and Petta.
- He felt sequels lacked a strong reason to continue.
- Jailer's ending provided a clear path for a sequel.

Rajinikanth has shed light on his decision-making process regarding film sequels, specifically explaining why he declined offers for 'Baasha 2' and 'Petta 2' before agreeing to 'Jailer 2'. The veteran actor stated that he typically avoids sequels if the original film's story does not present a strong, inherent reason for continuation. He cited receiving proposals for 'Baasha 2' and for 'Petta 2' from director Karthik Subbaraj, which aimed to expand Vijay Sethupathi's character, but found neither compelling enough.
The primary concern for Rajinikanth was that sequels might simply retread familiar ground without offering substantial new elements. However, the conclusion of 'Jailer', particularly its release on OTT, allowed him to re-evaluate the film's potential. The revelation of a larger network connected to Varma's character in the ending provided the narrative justification he sought for a follow-up.
Director Nelson Dilipkumar is set to return for 'Jailer 2'. Interestingly, Dilipkumar had initially planned a Telugu project but postponed it to focus on this sequel. Meanwhile, the release of Dhanush and Mammootty's 'Om: Chapter 1' has been rescheduled from October 16 to November 26, reportedly to avoid a direct box-office clash with 'Jailer 2'.
