This was the same month that Sushmita Sen won Miss Universe and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan won Miss World. Bedi and Rai were on stage together during the celebrations.
Interestingly, Bedi also admitted that he was initially "quite underconfident" about participating in pageants, as he didn't believe he had a chance of winning. However, he went on to win the Mr. India title and was selected to represent the country internationally.
