Varanasi Title Tangle: Rajamouli's film renamed!
29 Nov
Summary
- Filmmaker CH Subba Reddy claimed prior title registration.
- The Telugu version is now titled 'Rajamouli's Varanasi'.
- Other language versions retain the original title 'Varanasi'.

SS Rajamouli's highly anticipated film, originally announced with the title 'Varanasi,' has navigated a significant naming controversy. The issue arose when filmmaker CH Subba Reddy lodged a formal complaint, asserting his prior registration of the title with the Telugu Film Producers Council over two years ago. This legal challenge necessitated a resolution to avoid further complications.
The dispute has now been settled, leading to a revised naming convention for the film. The Telugu version will now be known as 'Rajamouli's Varanasi.' This adjusted title acknowledges the director's prominent association with the project while adhering to the resolution. Importantly, the film's title will remain 'Varanasi' for its Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and English versions.
Industry insiders suggest this dual-title approach is a strategic move. The grand launch event for 'Varanasi' had already generated substantial public recognition, making the name deeply embedded with the project. Renaming the Telugu version 'Rajamouli's Varanasi' effectively resolves the title conflict while preserving the widely recognized 'Varanasi' for broader audiences across different languages, ensuring continued brand leverage.
