Paul Mirfin, a 51-year-old former railway conductor, has transitioned from managing trains to curating art, opening his own gallery and studio at the Grade II listed Knaresborough Railway Station. Mirfin worked for Northern Rail on the Leeds to York line via Harrogate for 23 years before discovering his talent for impressionist oil painting during the Covid pandemic.
His artistic endeavors quickly became a primary income source, culminating in the opening of his Knaresborough station gallery. This location, which he describes as a "dream come true," allows him to combine his love for trains and art. The gallery has fostered a supportive community atmosphere, with former colleagues and passengers showing great enthusiasm.
A significant highlight of Mirfin's new career was a commission to paint a piece for the King in 2023. The artwork depicted a tree planted by the then Prince Charles in Harrogate. Mirfin also offers oil painting lessons, encouraging students to arrive by train.
Northern Rail highlighted that stations like Knaresborough are becoming valuable community assets. The railway company expressed pride in Mirfin's achievements and his gallery's contribution to the station's unique environment.
