Rahul Vaidya: Independent Music Surges Past Film Songs
17 Oct
Summary
- Playback singing's dominance has waned, replaced by independent music popularity.
- Singers now gain fame through live shows and self-released tracks.
- Vaidya cites power dynamics and lack of creative control in film music.
Singer Rahul Vaidya has noted a dramatic transformation in the music industry, asserting that independent music and live performances have overtaken film playback singing in achieving artist popularity. Vaidya, who gained recognition from "Indian Idol" in 2004 and has sung for films like "Race 2," explained that the benchmark for success has shifted from film singing to artists building their careers independently.
He observed that many singers who haven't sung numerous playback songs are now highly recognized and command large global concerts. Vaidya criticized the obstacles and power imbalances within the film music sector, where creators often have limited influence over their work, contrasting it with the creative freedom in independent music.
Vaidya further suggested that some singers pursued music composition due to insufficient singing opportunities in films. He personally prefers creating independent tracks at his own pace, balancing it with his busy live performance schedule and television commitments, while not ruling out future film composing.
Currently, Vaidya is participating in the reality show "Pati Patni Aur Panga" with his wife, Disha Parmar. The couple, married in 2021, previously considered but did not participate in "Nach Baliye." Vaidya emphasized the need for caution when working with a spouse on such shows.
