His prolific work included coverage of the 1972 Bangladesh refugee crisis and the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy. Rai also captured intimate portraits of prominent figures such as Indira Gandhi and the Dalai Lama, alongside profound portrayals of ordinary Indian life.
Throughout his distinguished career, Rai contributed to major publications like Time and Life, received the Padma Shri in 1972, and was nominated to Magnum Photos by Henri Cartier-Bresson. He leaves behind a vast archive and numerous books, with a 57th book in progress.
