30 Apr
Summary
- Mural honoring Queen Elizabeth II was painted over without notice.
- The artwork celebrated the Platinum Jubilee and royal connection.
- Railway operator cited repeated vandalism and damage for removal.

A street art collective, Reprezent Project, has voiced strong disappointment following the unannounced removal of their Queen Elizabeth II mural at Great Yarmouth Railway Station. The artwork, a community project completed in 2022 to mark the Platinum Jubilee, was covered in dark paint by the station operator, Greater Anglia.
Greater Anglia explained that the decision to paint over the mural was due to repeated vandalism and damage to the wooden structure it was mounted on. They indicated the artwork had deteriorated over the years. The railway company acknowledged the value of art in enhancing station environments and community connections.
Ruben Cruz, co-founder of Reprezent Project, stated that the mural was a significant element of the town's heritage and their art trail. He expressed frustration at the lack of prior communication and noted that volunteers would have fundraised for necessary repairs if informed. Cruz believes public art initiatives can foster local pride and reduce antisocial behavior.
