Summary
- Queen Mother favored Grenadier Guard FitzRoy for Elizabeth.
- FitzRoy was sent to India to remove him from the picture.
- Prince Philip's uncle facilitated the Queen's romance.

Queen Elizabeth II's celebrated 73-year marriage to Prince Philip almost took a different turn, as revealed by royal historian Hugo Vickers. The Queen Mother, who held a particular fondness for the Grenadier Guards, had hoped her daughter would marry Hugh FitzRoy, the Earl of Euston.
Vickers explained that during World War II, the young princesses were kept at Windsor Castle, where Grenadier Guards were stationed. This environment reportedly influenced the Queen Mother's desire for Elizabeth to marry a member of this prestigious regiment.
However, Prince Philip's uncle, Lord Mountbatten, played a pivotal role in ensuring the royal couple's courtship. It is understood that Mountbatten secured a significant position for Earl Euston as an aide-de-camp to the Viceroy of India, effectively removing him from the picture.
Elizabeth and Prince Philip married on November 20, 1947. The Queen ascended to the throne in 1953 and enjoyed a decades-long marriage until Prince Philip's passing on April 9, 2021, at the age of 99.
