A groundbreaking virtual reality preview has offered an early glimpse of the national memorial dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II. Renowned architect Lord Foster utilized a VR headset to assess a hybrid mock-up of the statue, which will commemorate the late monarch's extensive reign and legacy.
The monumental bronze statue is slated to depict Queen Elizabeth II in her younger years, specifically in her twenties, standing on a plinth overlooking The Mall. A smaller, accompanying statue of her devoted husband, Prince Philip, will be positioned a few paces behind, sculpted in his naval uniform and appearing to look up at his wife.
Foster + Partners and the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee conducted this "hybrid mock-up" to precisely plan the scale of the two statues and their plinths at Marlborough Gate. This technological approach ensured the design harmonizes with the historically significant surroundings.
The final design was shaped by public consultation, moving from an initial concept of the Queen on horseback to the current portrayal in her Order of the Garter robes for greater accessibility. The memorial will also feature gardens, paths, and a glass bridge, with the Queen's statue standing 7.3m high on a 4.3m plinth, and Prince Philip's at 3.8m high on a 1.5m plinth.
